The Big One…..Chapter 72

Kevin Cross and his girlfriend Amber were not surprised by what they heard at the back porch meeting held by one Dave Rippley. Following the quake that had brought about the destruction of the world they had lived in, wiping out over ninety five percent of it’s population nothing came as a shock anymore. Kevin was actually relieved to know that he was not the only one to experience encounters with creatures from out of this world. That is why when Abe and Anna asked Amber and himself to look after little Emily for a while he gladly accepted. It would be nice to play some games and get on about the business of living now that everyone seemed to be more or less on the same page. The rest of the day was spent playing ball in the meadow, chasing about and as supper time drew near they were joined by Rem Josephus and Donna Case for a large game of hide and seek. Little Emily loved this game and was almost always hard to find when it was her turn to hide. That is why everyone was not at all concerned when she could not be found right away. Within the next five minutes however there was a building feeling of fear when everyone began to call her name in increasingly panicked tones spreading out through the woods. It was not long before Abe and Anna returned home to join the others. There was a natural suspicion regarding Gorbel and his band of agents who had once taken Dave Rippley but no one could really know for sure. There was only two individuals who really would have knowledge of such a thing. One would be the person who orchestrated the act and there was a second creature who pretty much saw everything that happened  by the name of Vooch.

Kevin on the other hand scrambled through the woods with the others and upon becoming perplexed to the point of his wits end exploded into another one of his emotional outbursts.

The Big One …………………….Chapter 71

Abe Yoder and his love Anna were not surprised by what they had heard at the back porch meeting. During this time Dave Rippley had explained in depth everything that had been going on in terms of encounters with strange creatures from start to finish. Anna did later admit to Abe that if they had not run into that oversized strange worm like creature, she would have had a much harder time believing what Dave had told them. Following this meeting Abe and Anna decided to take another trip to the goldmine that he and little Emily had discovered. The little girl had decided to stay home to hang out with Kevin and Amber who would play games and generally keep her entertained. The afternoon sun was bright but a cool fall wind was now blowing as they walked with jackets on to a place not far from the mine where they kept a few tools concealed. Dave Rippley was the only other person besides the little girl who knew about this place and they both wanted to keep it that way for now.  There did not seem to be anything wrong upon approaching the broken mountain that contained the molten gold mine. It was when they began to mount the pathway that would lead them to the hidden opening that the two froze in their tracks.  Standing near the opening was five of the ugliest six legged creatures that looked like they had just climbed up from the bowels of hell. The two youngsters were so horrified that they could not move or speak just stand there in horror. Abe was finally able to mumble something in a low tone.

“Prophecy it’s like the words of the old bible prophets who spoke of the horrors of the last days has come true”.

Emily simply gripped Abe’s hand whispering in his ear with a voice of stiff fear.

“Abe come on lets go, lets just go and warn the others”.

Both backed away slowly with the creatures making no move to approach them or follow. The walk back to the house was quick and knowing what they knew about Casper’s technology it was not hard to figure out what had happened. Fred had discovered this mine probably by having his creatures follow them and was now telling them in no uncertain terms that this gold was now his.

The even bigger shock of fear was when they got back to the farm house to find everyone in the woods shouting for little Emily who had gone missing.

The Big One………….Chapter 70

Dave Rippley had a meeting on the back steps the morning following his experience with Abe,Anna and little Emily at the gold mine. By this time everyone at the meeting had experienced something with the creatures that were under the control of Fred Casper’s special new signal directive. These creatures were literally from out of this world and so any contact or encounter would be very traumatizing to say the least. Dave was aware of most things Fred Casper knew and so starting with the ships crashing in Roswell New Mexico he toke the gathering through the years to special new signal directive and it’s involvement in their present lives. This also included their enemy in the neighbouring mountain fortress and how young Rippley had been taken and roughed up by Anson Gorbel and his agents then rescued by the tremor toad at the direction of Casper’s console. He also laid out the happenings at Diego Island and how Casper had learned of Gorbel’s invasion of the place and that Anson Gorbel had plans of world domination coupled with the annihilation of any people or person that opposed him. Having filled in the blanks for this gathering that listened mostly in silence this meeting ended with folks drifting off silently in various directions. Dave knew that Casper who had not attended this meeting would not be happy with what he had just done. There would be some sort of threat or vengeance aimed at young Rippley and he knew it. Dave decided to take a walk in an effort to clear his head. His memory of what had happened near the valley rim not long ago was still fresh in his mind and so he stayed near the farm in the main valley area. Without thinking however he walked around back of the largest barn and found himself alone. Thinking nothing of this he paused stretching and letting out a relaxed yawn. It was when he was in full stretch and mid yawn that he heard a familiar reptilian croak and froze on the spot. Not even ten feet from where he stood was one of those six legged creatures that Casper had tasked with guarding the upper rim of the valley against Gorbel and his agents. Virtually paralyzed with fear Dave stumbled backwards his back thumping up against the barn seeing now that this hideous creature was accompanied by about ten others. He knew they would not be here if Casper had not sent them and so speaking through clenched teeth he let Casper know this.

” You may control these creatures Casper but you will never control us”.

This statement had barely left his lips when the first creature he had seen moved in placing one huge claw on the barn wall next to Dave’s head where he could see the poison leaking from the talons. It then brought it’s ugly head with seven eyes not three inches from his nose exposing young Rippley to the most terrible unearthly and hideous breath he had ever inhaled. Dave began to gag as it’s twelve foot tongue came out of it’s mouth slowly and maliciously coiling around Dave’s neck. He closed his eyes tight every fibre of the young lad’s being preparing for the worst. It was then that the unexpected happened. Dave heard the other creatures give a croak of shock and opening his eyes could see that his assailant had with drawn his tongue from around his neck. What happened next was instant as Vooch came out of the ground catching the creature near Dave by one of his legs hurling him through the air into the trees. The other creatures uttered a collective grunt of shock and toke off. Dave stood there trembling hardly able to stand while Vooch simply looked at him with boredom and with a sigh was off once more knowing with satisfaction that there was a very pissed off scientist holding the special knew signal directive console who had once again been cut down to size.

Dave did not know much about those terrible creatures but one thing was certain. They certainly knew who that huge space worm was and wanted no part of him.

The Big One………..Chapter 69

Anson Gorbel was smarting badly from the devastating defeat that had been dealt to his force of agents by Fred Casper’s special new signal directive technology creatures.  While many of histories warriors would have long ago given up, Anson continued to gather his agents around him to brainstorm for options. This man possessed a very deep and dark evil  that would never suffer defeat let alone give up. He knew what the next move would be thanks to his  Russian buddy and former KGB agent Egor Vrolev.  Egor had been monitoring the valley settlement on the opposite side of the fortress mountain. This place had about one thousand five hundred people in it including what appeared to be women and children. Gorbel felt certain that these folks would have information about the valley farm run by that pain in the ass Fred Casper and most likely could tell them a thing or two about special new signal directive. This time however there would be no blunders or mistakes. It appeared the leader of this bunch was a woman and her teenaged son who lived in a hill side dwelling up the hill a way. They would wait until she went to do her usual cooking and baking for the villagers below, that usually toke place in the evening. A quick missile strike would take care of any villagers or technology that could foil Gorbel’s plan. They would then swoop in by helicopter to search the area while having a little chat with this village leader. A very evil smile creased the corners of Gorbel’s mouth as he thought of the instant victory this would bring him and of course the statement this could make to inhabitants of the valley farm. Gorbel would have his people watch a few days more just in case there was other intel to gather and then make his move.

Vooch followed Anson Gorbel’s nephew Tyler to where he finally ran into the people of that valley settlement with the woman leader who lived in a hillside dwelling above the village. These people had come together following the quake and worked very well with one another building a good living place complete with a means to survive. Belinda Grace was the name of their leader and she lived with her teenage son Tristan in a cabin nestled on a little land bench that looked over their village settlement. Tyler and Tristan hit it off right away and quickly became like brothers helping one another with chores and such as Tyler now lived with this small family.

Vooch had planned to go and explore an abandoned brewery not far away but upon leaving Fred Casper he suddenly felt for some reason that he should stay close to Tyler Gorbel and watch over him. He watched now as visitors came and went from the home of Belinda Grace to bring gifts and ask advice. They all seemed to stand out side after knocking on the door waiting for someone to open it. This was just one of many things Vooch could never understand about these human’s . Why did they not just simply bash through a wall?

The Big One…………Chapter 68

Fred Casper was very worried about the fact he had released Vooch because he could not find him on the special new signal directive console. All technology or beings as they were called in the laboratory, where brought into subjection to the console before activation. Casper lay on his bed in the farm house basement with eyes on his console and mind scrambling for answers. He thought it would be good even if he could see the creature at least from a distance in order to get some sort of fix on his where bouts. With his eyes growing heavy Fred lay the console aside and settled down for some sleep.

Casper got his wish for a fix on the location of Vooch in the vey next second as he crashed through the basement wall sending Casper sprawling in shock to land on the floor. Casper lay there a few seconds stunned beyond belief before looking over to see Vooch staring at him through those large eyes that made him look sleepy. There was only one difference in that the large worm actually appeared to have a smirk on his face. This was enough to instill outrage in the usually calm scientist as the words sputtered from his mouth.

“VOOCH YOU SON OF A BITCH”, Casper dove for his fifty seven magnum as he said this but the creature was gone in a flash leaving a large hole in the wall with dirt and mud pilled high on Casper’s bed.

Casper was a very smart man and knew there must be a way to get a visual on this creature. Without any further thought he was up the stairs, standing on the back porch while scanning the surrounding farm for any sign of this pain in the ass he had inflicted on himself. Donna Case and Rem Josephus came from the barn area where they had been quietly living together for some time now. Kevin Cross and Amber Gershwin had been sitting on the porch when he came out but Casper had ignored them in his haste and they had simply gone into the house. Fred felt that maybe Rem and Donna could help him and so jumping off the porch he headed across the field toward them. That was when Vooch came up from under the ground right in front of him and Casper was so stunned that he hesitated and the creature disappeared. Donna and Rem both saw this and gave a shout of surprise. Casper simply looked down the hole and turned to the other two who once again pointed behind the scientist. Casper turned to see Vooch once again staring at him with that smirk. This angered Fred to no end who was now starting to feel humiliated in the presence of Donna and Rem. Pointing his gun was pointless because Vooch simply disappeared. Giving a sigh of impatience Fred turned and began to explain about this creature to the two and taking a step toward them his leg dropped into a sink hole landing Fred on his face. He tried to get up but when he did something grabbed his leg that was in the hole pulling him downward so that his head was all that showed with one flailing arm. Annoyance was now giving way to panic as Donna and Rem ran to pull him out and it toke some time before Vooch let go of Fred’s foot. They did get Fred’s foot out and pulled him away from the hole where he tried once more to explain while he sat on the ground.

Now Vooch was a creature not of this world that possessed many capabilities inside and out. He surfaced one more time that day to bid the scientist farewell for now. With Fred sitting on the ground Vooch came up right between his knees and looked the scientist directly in the eye. His reappearance was of great surprise to all and his departure was one of disgust as he barfed up a large pile of green slime right next to the scientists crotch a kind of going away present and oh what a wretched stench.

The Big One………..Chapter 67

Kevin Cross had seen and experienced many crazy things since the quake that had made him rather emotionally tender of late. This most recent episode had come when he and his girlfriend Amber Gershwin had been playing catch in the meadow near the tree lined slope. Kevin had gone up the slope a ways to retrieve the ball when a large lump heaved up the ground chasing Kevin back down the incline tipping trees over in it’s wake. A few of their friends had passed by before this but were too far away by the time it occurred. Kevin and Amber toke a while to calm down  and sat in the meadow for some time talking and holding one another. This had not only upset Kevin but Amber was shaken by this entire situation. The two finally agreed to head back to the farm house and tell someone and so keeping their eyes open for any signs of whatever it was that had troubled the two, they hesitantly walked towards the house.

About this very time Vooch had just got done freaking out Abe and friends except his little pal Emily. He was headed now for the farm house to pay his good bud Fred Casper a surprise visit. He was traveling about one hundred feet below ground when , what do you know. There was those two excitable youngsters that had gotten so upset not long ago on the slope. He really felt it would be rude to just pass under their feet without paying them another visit.

Kevin and Amber were only about fifty yards from the house when out of the ground in front of them sprang a large worm like creature. It had large eyes half open as if it would rather be asleep topped by bushy brows. It appeared to be about four feet long and a couple feet in width. Tilting it’s head to one side it stared at them with passive boredom. The two youngsters reacted pretty much the same as they had on the slope with Amber rendered speechless this time stumbling backwards while gasping, hands clasped over her mouth. Kevin was horrified but stood there a moment before launching into one of his out bursts.

Vooch simply gave another sigh of boredom and continued on his way to see Casper. These humans really could get so worked up over a little friendly visit. His visit with Casper however would be somewhat less than such.

The Big One……………..Chapter 66

Abe Yoder was thrilled that Dave Rippley had agreed to go along with Anna, Emily and himself because they needed a smart young person like Dave to help out. They had things fairly well in hand as far as the gold mine was concerned but Abe had always believed young Rippley to be a smart able bodied man who was wise in many ways beyond his years. He hoped that there would be an end to animosities between Dave and the scientist Fred Casper. The Amish lad liked them both and wished beyond all things that peace would prevail everywhere so that humanity could rebuild and move on. It did not take long to reach the mine and set about working. The other gold bars that had been set to cool had done so and about fifty others were now set to do the same. Abe was right about Dave who instantly showed some better ideas about working smarter instead of harder. A couple of hours went past and Emily lost interest in the work and was allowed to play outside so long as she did not wander too far. Another hour went bye and Anna went outside to check on Emily before they headed home while Dave and Abe finished a last minute task. They could all hear the little girl laughing and talking but thought it nothing as little children often had active imaginations.

It was a scream of fear from Anna that brought the two young men running outside to see little Emily petting the head of what appeared to be a large worm like creature with big round eyes topped by sagging eye lids that made the creature look like it would rather be asleep. The creature tilted it’s head to one side as if looking at the screaming Anna Colbenze for the first time. Emily continued petting this large worm until pulled away by Anna who instructed her to run in the opposite direction. Vooch gave a sigh of boredom and was gone in a flash under ground to check out some large steel structures he had seen a few valleys away. He also wanted to stop bye to bug that Casper human on his way over. Yes he could use some tormenting ,given his arrogant ways and could be taken down a few notches sooner rather than later.

The Big One……………………..Chapter 65

Dave Rippley was in a mental fog after his confrontation with Fred Casper that ended with the youngster leaving Casper’s living quarters at gun point. Dave knew he must tell the others everything and leave nothing out regardless of what Casper thought. Sitting on the farm house porch his mind drifted back to horrors he had been told about and seen first hand. Shudders of terror went through him as thoughts of those terrible creatures from another galaxy came to mind. Dave did not even notice Abe Yoder , Anna and little Emily standing there staring with eyes full of sympathy and inquisitiveness.

“Dave are you okay, I mean we heard all that commotion downstairs and hope everything is alright”?

Young Rippley shock his head in resignation, ” I’m fine and so is Fred but I need you folks to get everyone together at some point because I have something to tell you all”.

Abe nodded in understanding, ” okay but in the mean time we would like you to come with us because we want to show you something”.

Feeling that it may be a good thing to get his mind off of the present unpleasantness for  the moment Dave agreed to go with them and so off they went.  Passing across the meadow on route to Abe’s gold mine they saw Kevin and Amber playing catch near the opposite slope and waved. They were too far away by the time Vooch chased Kevin down the slope from the tree line and only heard distant shouts. Vooch however saw them and although he wanted to bother Fred Casper decided to follow them when he was done with these two screaming youngsters. These humans could get very excited at times over nothing but a little fun.

The Big One……………………Chapter 64

Anson Gorbel was feeling the tension rise within himself as time drew near for the implementation of this coming military strike against the valley farm in order to seize the special new signal directive technology. He had felt a renewed confidence at the outset of preparations for this mission but felt a certain unease now. There had been a message sent to Anson earlier that day telling him that his partner the former Russian agent Egor Vrolev had recovered much quicker than expected and was moving around the base. Gorbel had chosen to have all three drones sent from that same base situated in what used to be the southern states in order to maintain the greatest element of surprise. The situation room screen came to life with an image of a rather pale Egor Vrolev still in his underwear sporting a big smile.

“Hey boss hows it going with you”? I know you are preparing for the big mission but I found something nearby your base in those mountains that you might want to know about”.

Without another word Vrolev had images of extensive surveillance footage sent to Gorbel’s screen. It showed a small valley settlement that appeared to contain some fifteen hundred survivors of the recent quake. This place was on the opposite side of the fortress mountain from where the valley farm stood. Gorbel’s smile was dark and evil while nodding his head taking this all in. Vrolev was very annoying and Anson could not decide what element of his person made it more so, his loud voice or that annoying Russian accent. Every now and then however his very important usefulness would show reminding Gorbel why he kept him around.  Once this mission was over he would have to pay these people a visit when the time was right. They probably knew something about that valley farm, possibly even a thing or two about that pain in the ass scientist Fred Casper.

Tyler Gorbel came up beside Anson about this time with news.

“Hey Unc the mission is about to begin and the drones are on target within a couple of minutes. The three insertion helicopters are lifting off for the valley as we speak”.

Anson had lost count of how many times he had corrected this youngster about how to speak properly, especially about referring to him as Unc. He had no time for this right now and so whirling about to face the youngster he simply snarled a most nasty order those dark eyes full of sedition.

“Get out of here NOW”!

The situation screen came to life once more with all three drones approaching the valley farm at a very high altitude. The radio crackled as all three insertion helicopters notified base that they were on their way to the valley farm. All seemed very well but only for a moment as the three drones entered a large bank of clouds and did not come out the other side. Their observation cameras simply went blank. There was an instant buzz of confusion in the situation room as everyone was totally bewildered. There was no debris from the drones to indicate they had exploded, it simply seemed they had evaporated. Anson Gorbel had seen too much already and instantly ordered the three insertion helicopters to be called off. The only problem was that two of them had already dropped their teams at the valley rim and the other was about to land to do the same. All hell let loose in one moment as the helmet cams of the agents showed out of nowhere some sort of hideous looking creatures attacking the first two teams ripping them to shreds. The other helicopter had not landed and was called off but as it was lifting back into the air one of those creatures jumped onto the side ripping it’s door off and climbing inside. Everyone in the situation room turned their heads away but could hear the screams of horror, chaos and agony from the aircraft as it spun out of control eventually crashing into the valley near the fortress.

Gorbel was in shock like the others but there was always that deep, black and evil rage that lived inside him constantly. This man had given himself over to a very wicked way through the years and it manifested now as the darkest anger one could imagine welled up to a hideous crescendo while he looked around for anyone or something to vent it upon. He spied his nephew Tyler slipping out an access door that led to a wooded pathway on the mountain side and was after him in a flash. Tyler was not aware of his uncles pursuit and was headed down the path when an iron grip seized his arm lifting him into the air. Gorbel was a powerful man and even more so when angry, bringing his gaze to bare on his nephew his rage spewded out through clenched teeth.

“I’m sick and tired you little piece of shit, you have been nothing but a problem since I brought you on board and I have had enough”.

He then flung the youngster to the ground like a rag doll while standing over Tyler his dark gaze leering down at him.

” So I think if I have grown tired of you I might as well be rid of your useless annoying ass”, said Anson  drawing his gun from a side holster to point it at Tyler’s head.

The young lad did feel fear as if beholding an extremely evil monster he had never known to exist for the first time. There was however a much stronger emotion he felt called hurt or a broken heart. This man was his uncle, brother of his very own mother and had been his only blood relative since she had passed over a year ago. Now here he stood weapon in hand about to snuff out his life as an exterminator would kill a rodent. How could someone be so terrible cold and cruel? Tears welled up in Tyler’s eyes and a lump formed in his throat. He wished for the first time in his young life that he had never been born and had nothing in this world.

It seemed that this would be a perfect time and place for Anson Gorbel to commit such an act, all alone on this mountain side with no one around. But he would be wrong because someone was watching him very closely. Not even fifty feet below his own feet there was an old creature from an ancient galaxy monitoring his every move. Vooch came up from beneath Anson’s feet like a shot out of a gun sending the man flying into the air to land on his back while the gun he had held clattered off down the mountain side.  Gorbel lay there staring in horror at the massive worm like creature that now towered over him. It had massive heavy lidded eyes that looked like the thing would rather be asleep and thick brows above them. Vooch then turned his gaze to the trembling heart broken youngster who knew instantly what he must do. Tyler leaped to his feet heading off into the trees. Gorbel saw his chance and scrambled back through the door into the fortress. Tyler knew that his life with Uncle Anson was done and before him lay a vast unknown. The early fall air was cold on his skin as he had nothing but a t shirt on. Tears poured down his face as his broken heart never felt so all alone. He did not know it at the time but there was someone who would be with him always and help would never be far away.
