The Big One……………………….Chapter 32

Kevin Cross opened his eyes once again to the wonderful angelic face of Miss Amber Gershwin. There was a wonderful and unmistakable feeling of deep salvation that he felt by simply looking into her eyes. All of the hardship this young man had been through seemed to melt away and little did he know but she felt the same way.  Kevin had dated a number of girls in his time as a surfer but had never felt anything near what set his very soul on fire with this blue eyed blonde ,seemly heavenly being. He ate the lunch she had brought him as she dabbed his forehead once more with the cold cloth. It was supper time now and it sounded like everybody was in the kitchen downstairs eating and chatting rather loudly.  Amber had helped him back to bed and did not seem to want to leave his side.

” How do you feel there Mister”, asked Amber with a smile?

” I’m okay”, said Kevin with an even bigger smile.

” I really want to thank you for looking after me all this time”, he said blushing a bit.

“Oh that’s just no problem”, said the young lady as she too blushed while she purposely made a chore out of dipping the cloth in the bucket to avoid his gaze.

For the first time in his life Kevin was fully aware of his feelings and  his senses became heightened. He could here all manner of crazy talk in the kitchen below about butterflies and drones. There was mention of some sort of crazed toad that had gotten the attention of Dave and his girlfriend coupled with the mention of a distant sound of an explosion.

These things were not important to him at this moment as he toke Amber by the hand sitting up on the bed he pulled her close and kissed her on the mouth. She did not pull away, in fact she embraced him and they sat there for the longest time riveted in time and space, locked in a kiss. When finally they stopped Kevin held her close.

“I love you”, he whispered stroking her soft hair and every beat of her heart echoed in tandem with his.

“Me too”, was her soft reply and she left the room to get supper.

It was dusk now and Kevin was vibrating with love and passion as he went to the window to gaze at the meadow that was slowly disappearing in the gloom of encroaching darkness. His mind was so occupied that it toke him a couple of minutes to realize that the whole meadow was filled with butterflies of the same kind he had seen earlier and they were glowing in the gloom floating around on the dusk breeze.

The Big One…………………..Chapter 31

Abe Yoder and young three year old Emily adapted to life on the valley farm right away. They played in the meadow by day and slept in the same bedroom by night. There was a small room on the ground floor of the main house that was set aside for them but Abe being the good Amish boy that he was soon built Emily and himself a small home down the meadow a ways near the tree line. Everyone benefited from his natural knowledge of farming and the chores were not as hard because Abe explained many things from tending to horses to cattle and goat management. Planting and tending to crops was another thing that the young Amish lad helped them with from soil preparation to managing plants when they were growing.  One fine afternoon Abe was chasing Emily through the meadow as they played a game of tag. They had just finished with one of Emily’s favorite stories about a big bear in the woods. She loved to talk about bears since their rather close encounter with one during their recent journey. They were running towards the back of the house when something  caught the young girls attention. Flying around not far above their heads was the most beautiful butterfly they had ever seen. Growing up on the farm Abe had seen many wonderful butterflies but this one looked just like a stained glass window on a church he used to see when they visited the city.  At that very moment they both froze as a sound came from the sky and a plane appeared and circled the meadow. Something inside Abe suddenly did not feel right and so he scooped the little girl into his arms and headed back towards their little house. It was getting on towards supper now and he had a nice pot of beef stew on the stove and his stomach was grumbling. The three women had taken a shine to the little girl and so they had recently baked a huge batch of cookies for her and this brought back memories of the farm and life as quiet people of the land. Emily curled up on her bed for a nap as Abe moved out onto the porch to meditate and pray. No sooner had he settled into one of the chairs he had built when a distant explosion in the other valley brought him to his feet. From his vantage point he could see two in the meadow come to their feet and two more came from the barn. Little Emily however just kept right on sleeping.

The Big One……………………………………Chapter 30

After seeing the drone Dave Rippley and  Loraine Michaud had headed back to the valley farm to tell the others about what they had seen. Since burying Loraine’s friend Tabetha Long a number of days ago, there had been no official memorial service, just a stone erected over her grave at the far end of the valley meadow. The two plus hours of travel back to the farm was therefore a constant movement back and forth between the drone citing and a proper funeral service for her dear friend. Upon arriving at the farm they had encountered Amber Gershwin in the kitchen and had been in the process of telling her about it when the drone flew over. Not long after that Kevin who had gotten out of bed a bit too soon after his ordeal had fallen to the floor upstairs sending Amber up to see to him. After getting things together for supper the two went outside to sit in the meadow and enjoy the nice weather when Bill Langely came over to them with a rather concerned look on his face.

“What’s up Bill”, asked Loraine. “You look like you just lost your best friend”?

“Have either of you folks talked to Fred Casper lately”, asked Bill in a slow thoughtful tone?

” No we have not seen much of him since he got here really, why do you ask”, said Dave?

” Just went down to chat with him and see what he was up to and he acted all distant and almost offended that I disturbed him or something”, said Bill looking up into the evening sky as he pulled off his ball cap.

” Don’t worry about that”, said Loraine. “He has always been a rather eccentric science geek sort of a dude.  We must also remember this tragedy thing effects us all in different ways. I will get the girls together later and we’ll take a run down there to see if we can cheer him up”.

” That’s cool with me”, said Bill seeming to forget the whole thing as he glanced towards the barn and headed off in that direction to see what Donna Case was up to as she had been in there feeding the live stock.

Dave and Loraine talked more about other things when a very distant sound of an explosion reached their ears. They froze looking at each other as Bill and Donna came from the barn standing to stare towards the neighbouring mountain range. This had them in utter silence until Loraine spotted a gray coloured toad hopping through the grass and laughed as she pointed it out to Dave

“Look Dave, oh my God I have not seen a frog or toad up close since the quake. Get it Dave catch it I want to hold it and see him up close”.

What happened next was weird because as Dave got to his feet and walked over to it the creature turned its head to the ground and instantly shot into the depths of the earth to be seen no more.
